Staffordshire made, beech wood porridge spurtle.

Made by our friend Bob in the neighbouring county of Staffordshire.

One of the first tests we put the Netherton milk pan through was the porridge test – if it was easy enough to clean after making our oaty breakfast, then it passed.  And it did! And now we have the perfect accessory – a turned beech spurtle, resplendent with the Netherton logo. The spurtle has a fine turned finish and is in a natural finish with no oils of coatings.

The porridge spurtle originated in Scotland – the land of oats – in the 15th century and is traditionally rod shaped, so it can be used for stirring the porridge without lumps forming.  It is also used to mix soups and stews and because the wood will not react like metal, they are also useful for stirring your sourdough starter.

As the days get shorter, the wind chillier and the leaves start falling we start looking for scarves, hats and gloves; start lighting candles; air the winter duvet and stock up on porridge oats. A bowl of porridge has long been a favourite autumn breakfast here.  Sue’s grandmother’s Scottish heritage came through with her ascetic tastes, adding no more than a pinch of salt to her oats, whereas her dad is still eating his with a dollop of golden syrup and a splash of cream.  Perhaps that’s the secret to his longevity – he celebrated his 95th birthday this summer.
